Located in Baalbek, this modern guest house blends contemporary design with traditional Lebanese architecture. The ground floor features a social, open-plan living area, kitchen, and dining space, seamlessly connected to a lush courtyard through grand stone arches. The first floor is a private master suite with a shaded terrace offering panoramic views. Outside, a meticulously landscaped garden with a pool and a contemporary sculpture provides a tranquil, secluded oasis rooted in earthy tones.
Located in the historic city of Baalbek, Lebanon, this guest house is designed as a serene retreat that balances modern architectural lines with the warm, rustic charm of the region. As the architect, my vision was to create a space that offers both absolute privacy and a seamless connection to the outdoors.
Architectural Concept and Vision
The project is conceived as a private oasis within its environment. The exterior facade features clean, minimalist geometry and a neutral color palette that respects the sun-drenched landscape of Baalbek. The entrance is designed to provide a gradual transition, leading guests from the outside world into a secluded, light-filled interior.
Interior Layout and Spatial Design
Ground Floor: The Social Core
The ground floor is the heart of the home, designed with an open-plan layout to encourage movement and social interaction:
The Living Area: This space is defined by grand stone arches that frame the view of the courtyard. It serves as a natural extension of the garden, allowing sunlight to flood the interior.
Open Kitchen and Dining: The modern kitchen flows directly into the dining area, creating a functional yet elegant space for shared meals. Large glass partitions maintain a constant visual link with the pool and outdoor seating.
First Floor: The Master Suite
The upper level is dedicated entirely to the Master Suite, prioritizing tranquility and panoramic views:
Privacy and Perspective: The suite offers an elevated vantage point overlooking the entire garden and pool area.
Design Details: A deep, wooden-clad overhang provides a shaded terrace, offering a protected outdoor space to enjoy the breeze while shielding the interior from direct vertical sunlight.
The Courtyard and Landscape
The outdoor space is the unifying element of the design:
The Pool: Features integrated lounging steps and a central seating area, perfect for cooling off in the Mediterranean climate.
Greenery: The garden is meticulously landscaped with native trees and manicured lawn paths that soften the stone architecture.
Artistic Focal Point: A contemporary circular sculpture stands in the garden, providing a modern contrast to the traditional archways of the house.
Materials and Atmosphere
We carefully selected a palette of earthy tones—warm beiges, soft greys, and natural wood—to ensure the building feels grounded in its site. The use of the arches is a contemporary nod to traditional Lebanese architecture, reimagined through a clean, modern lens to create a timeless guest experience.
