Professional Projects

Located 13 km from Beirut on a scenic mountain slope, the historic Kahale Mill is being restored as a heritage site that blends history, nature, and community. The project includes rehabilitating the mill, creating a public garden, accessible pathways, and spaces for cultural events, while supporting local women and youth through a provisions cooperative. It aims to preserve the site, promote cultural and environmental tourism, and provide a vibrant space for residents and visitors to connect with heritage and nature.

Kahale Mill Renovation Project in Cooperation with Nawar Development and Tatweer

Kahale is a mountain village situated on one of the most picturesque slopes in Lebanon, ranging between 322 and 722 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 13 kilometers from Beirut, with a panoramic view of the city. The Kahale Mill represents a significant cultural and heritage asset, serving not only as a symbol of the village’s historical legacy but also as a potential source of local economic development. By transforming the mill into a heritage-based site, visitors can engage in relaxation, contemplation of the natural surroundings, and an appreciation of the village’s historical memory. The mill’s location within a lush, green environment adds further value, and the introduction of a forest road could improve access, enhancing the site’s appeal and encouraging visitors to experience extraordinary moments in a unique natural setting.

The project aims to restore and rehabilitate both the interior and exterior elements of the mill, including the pool, water channel, mill-wheel chamber, and grinding chamber. Additionally, the surrounding area will be transformed into a public garden suitable for families, children, and youth, with inclusive pathways designed for people with special needs. A stadium and a square, featuring a long staircase, will be created to accommodate rural, heritage, and cultural exhibitions and festivals. Furthermore, a local provisions house will allow village women to prepare and sell seasonal products, offering visitors an opportunity to purchase local goods and enjoy meals within the garden. A small model of the mill will also be constructed to demonstrate its traditional operation using water pressure and the grinding methods for wheat and corn.

The overarching objectives of the Kahale Mill restoration project include promoting social interaction and community participation, preserving the historical integrity of the mill, and providing a public space for inhabitants of all ages. The project also seeks to engage the local community in environmental stewardship by creating and maintaining the surrounding green spaces. Cultural and artistic activities will be encouraged through the establishment of external venues for performances and exhibitions, while women and youth will play an active role in the operational stage through a cooperative for the production and marketing of local provisions. Finally, the project aims to foster heritage preservation, develop environmental tourism, and generate social capital through the rental of facilities for events and celebrations.
